Sail Canada Basic Cruising Instructor Course - 2021 schedule TBA

Keelboat & Cruising Instructor Development courses are scheduled and delivered by BC Sailing and hosted by local sailing schools.
The Basic Cruising Instructor Course is the first certification in the keelboat instructor stream.
The course focuses on the development of lesson planning and teaching skills, in the classroom and on the water.
Successful candidates will be able to certify students for the Sail Canada Basic Cruising Standard.

Our 2020 Basic Cruising Instructor Course was interrupted to follow Covid-19 precautions. The classroom portion continued with online meetings, breaking ground with a new format, and was able to finish later summer with the final afloat session. The 2021 course timeline is still being developed, and will be kept flexible to accommodate changing public health conditions. Below is the 2020 schedule to illustrate the extent of the course instruction. PREREQUISITES

- Age 18 or older
- Sail Canada Basic Cruising Standard
- Sail Canada Basic Coastal Navigation Standard
- At least two years keelboat sailing experience
- First Aid Certificate with CPR level A
- PCOC card
- VHF Restricted Operator’s Certificate (Maritime) with DSC endorsement
- Demonstrate characteristics and motivations worthy of being at Sail Canada LTC/P Instructor
- Demonstrate a willingness to support the goals of the Sail Canada LTC/P program
- It is important that candidates be current in their sailing skills and knowledge prior to entry into Instructor clinics.
The sailing evaluation demands above average basic sailing skills and there is no time during the clinic for remedial work.
Exams
You will have to complete the following Sail Canada written exams and working papers:

During Part B

Candidates that have achieved a Sail Canada certification using the current exam within 12 months of the clinic may be excused from repeating that examination. Candidates with and Intermediate Cruising or Intermediate Crew Standard may be excused from repeating the Intermediate Cruising written examination.

Part A - Course Admission Assessment
The course admission assessment consists of two portions:
The single handed sailing evaluation cannot be repeated in the same calendar year
Part B - Basic Cruising Instructor Course
Candidates successful in the Part A assessment are invited to join part B. They will be given a number of further assignments at this time to prepare for the two weekends in Part B.
The course admission assessment consists of two portions:
- Friday evening classroom for Collision Regulations exam, Basic Cruising Standard exam, impromtu presentation
- Saturday aboard for the single handed sailing evaluation San Juan 24
- Saturday docking with crew Dufour 31.
The single handed sailing evaluation cannot be repeated in the same calendar year
- Candidates unsuccessful in the water skills evaluation will not advance to Part B. They may try Part A again in 2021.
- in this case a refund of $1099 plus 5% GST will granted to the unsuccessful candidate
- Unsuccessful written exams can be rewritten after two weeks, and must all be completed successfully by Aug 27, 2020.
Part B - Basic Cruising Instructor Course
Candidates successful in the Part A assessment are invited to join part B. They will be given a number of further assignments at this time to prepare for the two weekends in Part B.
INSTRUCTOR EVALUATOR BIOs
Bob Davies spent his youth dinghy racing on Ontario lakes before transitioning to the West Coast and keelboat sailing in 1988. Bob has sailed extensively on BC's coast plus international destinations including Croatia, the Caribbean and Australia. Bob is a member of the Sail Canada Cruising Panel which is responsible for developing teaching & training materials for the LTC/LTP Standards.
Christof Marti started sailing as a teenager on the the lakes of Switzerland. He since moved to Canada where he sailed extensively along BC's coast including the outside of Vancouver Island. His experience also include several offshore passages on the Pacific and the Atlantic. Christof has been teaching sailing in BC since 2009.
