 Sail Canada Instructor Course - Intermediate Cruising Instructor

Keelboat & Cruising Instructor Courses
Keelboat & Cruising Instructor development courses are scheduled and delivered by our Provincial Sailing Associations and hosted by local sailing schools.

Cruising (Keelboat Sailing) Instructor Courses  The Intermediate Cruising Instructor Course is the second certification in the keelboat instructor stream. The course focuses on the development of planning and teaching liveaboard courses in familiar & unfamiliar waters.



Candidates will have the opportunity to practice their ability to deliver training in a liveaboard environment.
Candidates sailing skills will be evaluated. Successful candidates will be able to train and certify students at the Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising Standard.

Prerequisites summary:
1. Be age 19 or older;
2. Be currently registered as a Sail Canada Basic Cruising Instructor;
3. Have at least one season and a minimum of 150 hours logged as a Sail Canada Basic Cruising Instructor;
4. Have the Sail Canada Advanced Student Standard;
5. Have logged cruising time of 17 days as a skipper, minimum 3 days at a time;
6. Demonstrate characteristics and motivations worthy of being at Sail Canada LTC/P Instructor;
7. Demonstrate a willingness to support the goals of the Sail Canada LTC/P program.

Ashore Knowledge
The candidate must:
1. Achieve a mark of 90% on the Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising examination;
--> To be completed BEFORE the clinic
2. Achieve a mark of 90% on the Sail Canada Basic Coastal Navigation examination (closed book);

--> To be completed BEFORE the clinic
3. Achieve a mark of 70% on the Sail Canada Intermediate Coastal Navigation examination; 
--> To be completed BEFORE the clinic 

4. Achieve a mark of 90% on the ColReg exam
--> Done on the first day of the clinic
5. Achieve a mark of 90% on all Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising Working Papers as supplied in the Intermediate Cruising Instructor
Candidate Workbook.
--> to be completed BEFORE the clinic
Note: It is important that candidates be current in their sailing skills and knowledge prior to entry into Instructor clinics.
​The sailing evaluation demands above average intermediate sailing skills.
There is no time during the clinic for remedial work. ​

INSTRUCTOR EVALUATOR BIOs
​Bob Davis' 
sailing journey began as a youth learning to sail and competitive dinghy racing in Ontario. He has been a keelboat sailing instructor since 1988. In addition to sailing on the West Coast, Bob also co-leads flotilla trips to international destinations including Australia, Croatia, Turkey and the British Virgin Islands. Bob is also a member of Sail Canada's Cruising Panel and was instrumental in developing teaching. 

Christof Marti started sailing as a teenager on the the lakes of Switzerland. He since moved to Canada where he sailed extensively along BC's coast including the outside of Vancouver Island. His experience also include several offshore passages on the Pacific and the Atlantic. Christof has been teaching sailing in BC since 2009.
