International Bareboat skipper CHALLEnge Weekend
Charter sailboat companies in some parts of Europe and the Caribbean require a Bareboat Skipper and International Certificate of Competency ICC.
Simply Sailing students can obtain both through International Yacht Training (IYT).
IYT has been approved by Transport Canada and the British Maritime & Coast Guard Agency (MCA) to issue international certifications. Simply Sailing is an IYT approved partner school.
This course is designed for evaluating experienced sailors with Intermediate Sail Canada and extensive coastal cruising or chartering experience. A five day Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising Standard plus IYT Bareboat Skipper and ICC is another pathway.
Format Three days including written exam and on-water evaluation

- Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising Standard including prerequisites
- PCOC
- Sail Canada Basic Cruising
- Canadian VHF - ROC (M) with DSC
- Sail Canada Basic Coastal Navigation
- Sailing CV of prior sailing and chartering experience and list of certifications
- 200 nm logged

STEPS TO REGISTERING FOR INTERNATIONAL BAREBOAT CHALLENGE
Certification process time by IYT may be 4 weeks. A $75 rush order can be arranged by Simply Sailing prior to submission.
- Friday 6pm Preload, safety briefing, written exam
- Saturday Sail to Howe Sound
- Sunday 5pm Return to home dock

STEPS TO REGISTERING FOR INTERNATIONAL BAREBOAT CHALLENGE
- Register with Simply Sailing for the Skills Assessment on the water (see below)
- Register as a student with IYT
- Register for and complete the free online courses IYT International Flotilla-Bareboat Skipper
- Email Simply Sailing your "Certificate of Completion" from the Online Theory E-Learning Courses
- Email Simply Sailing a photo or pdf of your VHF ROC (M) DSC radio operator card
- Review the Practical Skills Assessment performance objectives
- Successfully demonstrating all of the performance objectives during the weekend. Write written exam on board.
- Simply Sailing will send your information to IYT, and IYT will mail you a Bareboat Skipper card and an ICC card

VHF Requirement
A Canadian VHF ROC (M) DSC , or equivalent from your country of residence, is the only acceptable radio licence prerequisite. The IYT VHF theory certification included in the online course provides an excellent review, but is not a substitute for a valid VHF card, being only recognized in the Marshall Islands. Please note the following do not meet the VHF requirement:

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Important: If you are not a Canadian National please contact us. Citizens from certain countries (for example Switzerland or Germany) can only obtain an ICC outside of their countries if they are residents of Canada. US Citizens do not have any restrictions to obtaining an ICC in Canada.
